POLI 6350: Board Analysis

Video Transcript: "Hi everyone! My name is Abbey Crank, and I am a Spring 2025 graduate of Auburn University's Master of Public Administration program. Though I'm from Huntsville, Alabama,  Auburn has always felt like home. My family has been coming here since I was little, and I've loved it ever since.

I graduated summa cum laude from Auburn for the first time in 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and a minor in Psychology. My background in journalism introduced me to the world of local government and nonprofits, where I slowly discovered my passion for public service and community engagement. Those experiences opened my eyes to the power and intersectionality of storytelling, advocacy, and policy.

The MPA program has taught me that integrity, grit, and compassion are essential when starting a career in public service. Through the mentorship of incredible faculty and challenging projects, I've grown into a leader who is ready to step into a professional role and make an impact.

Competency 1 is a staple in every class you take in the MPA program. To be a successful administrator you need the ability to  guide and support others while working to a common goal.  One project that really puts this into practice was the Board Analysis paper in my Nonprofit Law and Governance class.

As the team leader, I guided three undergraduate students through the entire process, keeping up with deadlines and making sure we produced a strong analysis. I was the main copy editor of the group, the point of contact for communication, and I also wrote the introduction to kick off the paper. I also spoke with CARE's board president which gave me valuable insight into what it takes to lead a board and organization while staying true to its mission.

Competency 1 is all about leadership and guiding others to success, and this project really brought that concept to life. It challenged me to lead but also collaborate, communicate effectively, and think strategically. Overall, this experience reinforced the importance of strong leadership, and I'm excited to continue to apply these lessons as I move forward in the nonprofit sector."
